I have heard a couple different answers as to what the three parts mean. For Me personally I view it as the three underlying principles that govern everything I do in this lifestyle; which is Safe, Sane, and Consensual. I have also heard people use it as the three parts of BDSM; The first being BD (Bondage and Discipline), the second being DS (Dominance and submission), and the third being SM (Sadist and Masochist) I hope this helps.
